The mission of R5 is to promote an optimum quality of life and to provide comprehensive cancer care to its patients and their families. Care is provided for young adults, adults and the geriatric population. Staff members provide a holistic approach to the needs of the cancer patients. Every effort is made to integrate inpatient and outpatient care as appropriate with the FitzPatrick Cancer Center and Hospice.
The unit has 42 beds, 14 of which are private rooms. It is set up in a U-shape with the main nurses station in the center and two substations at each end. There is a solarium for use by patients' families and significant others .
SCOPE OF SERVICE: The unit provides care to medical and oncology patients including:
1. Patients with cancer
2. Patients with MRSA infection
3. Patients receiving chemotherapy
4. Patients receiving radiation therapy
5. Patients requiring nutritional assessment and management
6. Patients requiring pain assessment and management
7. Patients who are receiving palliative care
8. Patients with hematological disorders
9. Patients receiving radioactive implants
10. Patients with compromised immune systems
11. General medical/surgical patients are also housed on this unit.
