NYS Department of Health Approves Integrated Approach to High-quality Cardiovascular Care
CVPH Medical Center, an affiliate of Fletcher Allen Partners, has received approval from the New York State Department of Health to move forward with its plans to establish the “Northern New York Center of Cardiac Excellence” and grow its full range of cardiac services including angioplasties, electrophysiology and medical cardiology.
CVPH has long excelled in onsite elective, urgent and emergent PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention, or angioplasties) services; its program has ranked among the top 5% in the nation for the last three years and among the top 10% for seven years. The “Northern New York Center of Cardiac Excellence” will see increased volume as cases from northern New York presently served by Fletcher Allen Health Care move to CVPH.
This plan also calls for the consolidation of CVPH’s cardiac surgery program with Fletcher Allen Health Care. The decision to do this was based on significant decreases in cardiac surgery volumes regionally which reflect the trend nationally. Volume serves as a key indicator of quality; “you must do it often to do it well.”
Stephens Mundy, president & CEO of CVPH Medical Center stated, “While we recognize that there is an inherent sense of loss to this part of the plan, we are pleased that the Department of Health supports our greater vision of an integrated cardiovascularservice. And we applaud our Board of Directors for making tough decisions that keep our organization and communities vibrant.” A weekly clinic at CVPH Medical Center will allow cardiac surgery patients from Northern New York to receive follow up care closer to home.
Now with DOH approval, CVPH, in cooperation with the Fletcher Allen Partners’ network, will begin to create a more integrated approach to high-quality cardiovascular care across Northern New York and Vermont. This integrated Cardiovascular Service will optimize care coordination across the system, increase operational efficiencies and expand geographical reach. Fletcher Allen Partners is also working to form a cardiology group to serve Franklin and St. Lawrence counties covering Malone, Potsdam and Massena.
