The goal of the NNLM and its 6,500 organization members is to, "advance the progress of medicine and improve public health by providing U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and improving individuals' access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health."  NNLM is a division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), the largest biomedical library in the world, founded in 1836.  NLM is a division of the National Institutes of Health/Department of Health Human Services (NIH/DHHS).

Document Delivery

When the book or article you need is not readily available through our collections, library staff have several other options for acquiring it for you. This includes obtaining it from another institution or purchasing it from the publisher.  We participate in the National Library of Medicine's DOCLINE interlibrary loan and document delivery program.  In most cases, articles are sent right to your email.  Document delivery services will be provided in accordance with copyright regulations.  We also network with the Northern New York Library Network (NNYLN), a consortium of more than 50 academic, hospital, public, special and other libraries around the region to borrow and lend materials.

Literature Searches

The medical librarian can perform specialized, in-depth literature searches of the professional medical literature using National LIbrary of Medicine's PubMed, UpToDate, Cochrane Library, CINAHL and other databases.  Results can be sent right to your email.

New Issue and Table of Contents Notification

CVPH Medical Library subscribes to a variety of online nursing and biomedical journals.  Visit our Journals page to see all of our currently subscribed titles, including a link to the table of contents for the current issue.  Many journals provide email alerts when new issues become available.  Our Journals page also contains the links to all available RSS feeds to currently subscribed titles.  Using your web browser and/or favorite feed reader, you can select titles of interest and be notified when new issues are published, and link to the full text from anywhere on campus.

Instruction Sessions

Speak with the librarian about scheduling a training session to meet your needs.  Topics include targeted database searching, citation assistance, copyright basics, and locating health information on the Internet. We welcome suggestions for other topics as well.

Copyright Advisement

CVPH Medical Library is your copyright resource center and we encourage all staff to be versed in best practices for using copyrighted material.  The Copyright Clearance Center is a great resource for questions about copyright, and we recommend viewing their brief videos about different scenarios that may arise.  In addition, speak with the librarian about your options for when you need to obtain multiple copies of copyrighted content or if you want to show a videoclip during a meeting.  Have questions about fair use?  We're here to help.  Check out this brief video to learn more about copyright basics.  Bottom line...when in doubt, seek permission.
