Gayle Simmons–Byer, RN, Emergency Care Center

After 20 years as an administrative assistant for a large company in Montreal, QC, Canada, Gayle just had to become a nurse. “It was a spiritual thing, really,” she said. “It was something I just had to do.” And so she did. The wife and mother of three quit her job and returned to school for 23 months to earn her degree in nursing. Today, the Montreal native travels an hour and five minutes to CVPH to be part of a team of professionals who take pride in making a difference every day. Gayle takes her profession seriously, serving on the Medical Center’s Clinical Practice Council, a group charged with reviewing, improving and setting the standards of nursing care at CVPH. Landing a job as a full time registered nurse is not enough for Gayle who is now pursing a LEAD or leadership, excellence and development designation, training as a sexual assault nurse examiner and earning her bachelors of science in nursing online. “People go into nursing for a lot of different reasons. For me, it is what I am supposed to do.”
