CVPH Medical Center Named America’s 100 Best For Cardiac Care

Plattsburgh, NY – 4/24/14 – CVPH Medical Center today announced that it has been recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best hospitals for Cardiac Care.  Healthgrades, a leading online resource helping consumers search, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals, evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions and identified the 100 best hospitals within each procedure.

The achievement is part of the findings in the recently released “American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation,” which demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.  A 5-star rating indicates that CVPH’s clinical outcomes are better than expected when treating the condition or conducting the procedure being evaluated.

While open heart surgery cases have recently moved from CVPH to its Fletcher Allen Partner affiliate hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Care, the Champlain Valley Heart Center at CVPH continues to specialize in a full range of cardiac services including angioplasties, electrophysiology and medical cardiology.

As part of a plan developed within Fletcher Allen Partners, the Champlain Valley Heart Center will see increased volume as cases from northern New York, formerly served by Fletcher Allen Health Care, will move to CVPH.

Stephens Mundy, president and CEO of CVPH Medical Center, stated, “We’ve had to make some tough decisions recently regarding our heart program.  And while we have moved what will be approximately 100 open heart surgery cases a year to Fletcher Allen to align our services to better meet the needs of the region we serve, we are happy to let the community know that the rest of our cardiac program is thriving.  The Champlain Valley Heart Center at CVPH continues to excel and is among the best in the nation.  We are lucky to have such an exceptional cardiac program here in the North Country.”

“This recognition comes at a time when we are engaged in a system-wide reorganization across our network,” Mundy said. “With our colleagues at Fletcher Allen, we have strengthened the full range of cardiac services available in Plattsburgh, including angioplasties, electrophysiology and medical cardiology, in which the Champlain Valley Heart Center at CVPH continues to specialize.  Through the Heart Center, we provide access to superior, coordinated, connected care that delivers better outcomes and lower costs for everyone in the North Country and we want people to know that."

“Hospitals earn this distinction by providing better than expected outcomes for specific conditions and procedures,” said Evan Marks, EVP Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. “When selecting physicians associated with a hospital that has achieved this recognition, consumers can expect a commitment to exceptional clinical quality care.

"Mundy added, “Our team of cardiologists and dedicated employees bring a level of care to our community not found in most areas, especially rural areas such as ours.  And while we are very proud of Healthgrades’ recognition of our quality of care, we at CVPH know it’s more about the quality of life for our patients. ”
